El sello Strawberry de Cherry Red Records va a publicar el 21 de marzo una nueva box set que celebra el movimiento folk-rock estadounidense.
«Jingle Jangle Morning: The 1960s Folk-Rock Explosion» contiene 75 temas en tres CDs incluyendo canciones clave de Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Mamas & the Papas, Sonny Bono, Simon & Garfunkel, Gene Clark, Buffalo Springfield y muchos otros.
El anuncio del sello lo describe como “la recopilación más completa que se haya reunido jamás de un movimiento importante que transformó la música popular, que incluye éxitos, rarezas y cortes profundos de un amplio espectro de artistas”.
Además de grandes clásicos como «Subterranean Homesick Blues», «Eve of Destruction», «The Sounds of Silence», «For What´s Worth», «Do You Believe in Magic» o «Alone Again Or», la caja incluye temas inéditos en CD de Johnny Winter, David Blue y Jesse Lee Kincaid, y rarezas de Phil Ochs y Tom Rush.
También versiones poco conocidas de canciones de Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne y Clarence White junto a favoritas de Judy Collins, Dion, Scott McKenzie, Linda Ronstadt, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band y otros.
Además han tenido el buen gusto de meter lo más granado del folk-rok underground, cosas de The Leaves, The Blue Things, The Fugs, y, cómo no, la fantástica «A Public Execution» de Mouse (aka Mouse and The Traps), tal vez la mejor imitación que se ha hecho jamás del Dylan eléctrico 1965-66.
Las canciones fueron seleccionadas y secuenciadas para ilustrar sonoramente el asombroso crecimiento del folk-rock de 1965 a 1970, desde los primeros éxitos de los Byrds y Dylan hasta la integración de la psicodelia por parte de artistas como Jefferson Airplane y Love; el lanzamiento del género de cantautores por parte de artistas como Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, P.F. Sloan y Bob Lind; el country-rock temprano de Poco, Dillards, Grateful Dead y Mike Nesmith; e incluso algunas novedades de folk-rock rock y folk-rock de garaje para adolescentes.
La caja incluye notas detalladas de Richie Unterberger, autor del libro de dos volúmenes sobre la historia del folk-rock de los años 60, «Turn! Turn! Turn!/Eight Miles High».
